ABIA LONICERAE
Fig 1
DESCRIPTION: Body length 15 - 20mm.  The Honeysuckle Sawfly is a stunning creature and one rarely seen.  The head and thorax are dark, as are the clubbed antennae with the large swollen abdomen covered in gold and black banding.  The wing venation is simple with various areas shaded black and golden-orange.  The tarsal claws end in a long, single tooth.  BEHAVIOUR: A species quite localised and seems to turn up in the same spot with good regularity.  The larvae feed on Honeysuckle or Snowberry. DISTRIBUTION: Localised throughout perhaps due to the distribution of the foodplant. HABITAT: Parks, gardens, hedgerows and open woodland glades. PERIOD: May to July.
